Light in the Sonoran Desert is never the same twice. It can be low and soft, high and harsh, a brilliant shaft that forces a squint, or a gentle afterglow that renders distant mountains with the crisp edges of a paper cutout. Monsoon clouds may bring the dramatic skies often associated with landscape photography, but they are only one expression of the desert’s character. To truly appreciate this place, you must embrace the full spectrum of Sonoran light throughout the year. Otherwise, you may find yourself waiting through much of the season for conditions that rarely define the desert.
